Course summary

This degree focuses on the effect of nutrition on the functioning of the human body in health and disease. It equips you with specialist knowledge and skills in preventing, treating and managing ill health with food, nutrients and dietary change.

This is the first undergraduate Dietetics programme in the North East of England. You'll benefit from newly built, state-of-the-art facilities and our world-class research. Innovative and exciting teaching practices, including the use of case-based teaching, simulated learning opportunities, and integrated practice placements ensure you're well prepared for your future career.

Dietetics is a broad-based subject and you'll study topics ranging from the natural and clinical sciences through to the social sciences. This degree includes a year of study at master’s level to enhance your leadership skills and ability to influence future dietetic practice, as well as offering significant research experience.

Our Dietetics courses sit in the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sports Sciences.

AAB including Chemistry or Biology, plus one other science (which can include Mathematics, Psychology, Home Economics, Geography, PE) or ABB with both Chemistry and Biology. For Biology and Chemistry A Levels, we require a pass in the practical element. GCSE Mathematics and English (minimum grade B or 6) required if not offered at A Level. Applicants without both Biology and Chemistry will be asked for the higher offer in the range.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Access to HE Diploma
D: 45 credits

45 level 3 credits at Distinction including 15 credits in Biology and 15 credits in Chemistry. Credits in Mathematics and English language may be required if the minimum GCSE requirements have not been met.

Scottish Higher
AAABB

AAABB at Higher Grade including Chemistry or Biology, plus one other science (which can include Mathematics, Psychology, Geography). Mathematics and English required at National 5, minimum grade B (or grade 2 Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 equivalent) if not offered at Higher Grade.
Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers are accepted.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
32 - 34 points

34 points including Chemistry or Biology at Higher Level grade 5 or above plus one other science (which can include Mathematics, Psychology, Geography) or 32 points including Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level grade 5 or above. Standard Level Chemistry and Biology required at grade 5 and Standard Level Mathematics or Mathematical Studies and English required at grade 4 if not offered at Higher Level.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)
H1, H1, H2, H2, H3

H1H1H2H2H3 at Higher Level, including Chemistry or Biology, plus one other science (which can include Mathematics, Home Economics, Geography, PE). Higher Level Mathematics and English Language are desirable. If not offered at Higher Level, then Maths and English at Ordinary Level 2 will be required.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal
D3, D3, M2 - D3, M2, M2

D3 D3 M2 in Principal Subjects including Chemistry or Biology plus one other science (which can include Mathematics, Psychology, Geography) or D3 M2 M2 in Principal Subjects including Chemistry and Biology. GCSE Mathematics and English (minimum grade B or 6) required if not offered as a Principal Subject.

Applicants we feel may be suitable for the course will be invited to an interview.

Fitness to Practise

Applicants must satisfy Fitness to Practise requirements on admission to the course. This includes a health declaration and submission of an acceptable disclosure and barring service (DBS) clearance. Students coming direct to the course from a country outside of the UK must provide a letter of good conduct from their home country and will be required to submit an acceptable DBS at the end of the first year.
