Course overview
Instrumentation and control engineers are responsible for the efficient and safe control of large-scale processes, from nuclear power stations, oil refineries and chemical plants to smaller operations such as manufacturing centres, breweries and food production facilities. You develop the skills to design and maintain advanced measurement and control systems, and learn how these are applied to multimillion-pound chemical and manufacturing plants.

Instrumentation and control engineers drive innovation and efficiency in everything from advanced manufacturing and energy production, to pharmaceuticals, aerospace and finance. You are equipped with the critical skills to design, operate and optimise complex systems that underpin today’s automated world. As industries worldwide continue to embrace digitalisation and intelligent automation, the demand for highly skilled instrumentation and control professionals has never been greater.

Typical qualification requirements

A level

At least two A levels including grade C in mathematics.

UCAS Tariff
96-112

Tariff points may be from any combination of recognised level 3 qualifications including mathematics.

Scottish Higher

Including grade D in higher level mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma

Engineering - with merit in at least 24 level 3 credits including mathematics.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

You are expected to have at least Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills, typically, GCSEs in English language and mathematics at grade 4 (or C) or passes in level 2 Functional Skills.

Scottish Advanced Higher

Including grade D in higher level mathematics.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Distinction, Merit, Merit in an appropriate discipline including merit in further mathematics.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

At least five subjects studied at higher level, including grade B (H2 if awarded after 2016) in mathematics.
