Self-release for Clearing 2019

Following recommendations from the Clearing Working Group, we’ll be implementing applicant self-release for Clearing 2019.

Posted Wed 10 April 2019

The current process of applicants having to contact providers to request release will be replaced by a self-release they can action in Track themselves – saving valuable time for applicants and providers.

This process will be available to all placed applicants from 1 July. However, in this first year of introduction it will not be actively promoted to applicants. We will be monitoring the feature’s use exceptionally closely, comparing to previous year’s releases into Clearing, and taking action should any concerning applicant behaviour be seen.

We’ll be informing advisers about the new process through the ‘Are you ready for C&C?’ campaign, so they can effectively guide their students, and advise them of the implications.

Closer to the time, we’ll be producing guidance to support applicants through the process, explaining all the options open to them. We’ll share this with you when it’s available.

How will self-release into Clearing work?

The process is simple, and incorporates several warnings to make sure the applicant understands what they are doing, and the consequences of that.

  1. The applicant signs in to Track, and clicks the self-release button on their homepage.
  2. They will be taken to a page which explains what they’re about to do, with a drop-down list of questions they must complete, before confirming.
  3. They will then receive an email from us confirming they’re in Clearing, and advising them to phone UCAS immediately if they’ve made a mistake in releasing themselves.

We’ve created a set of FAQs, following initial feedback at the Annual Admissions Conference this week. And we’ll be giving further information, support, and guidance to providers as part of the ‘Are you ready?’ campaign, being launched at the end of May.
