Foundation courses: Plan B or a route to degrees
Monday 04 June 2018
15:15 - 16:15
Breakout session
Appropriate for all levels of experience
Summary
We all want our students to get places on their chosen degree courses, but we know there’ll be some who don’t achieve their expected grades, or a degree course offer at their preferred university is an unrealistic prospect. This session will explore university foundation provision as an alternative pathway to degree studies.
It will cover:
- different foundation models at UK universities
- how foundation courses help students transition to degree study
- how to help students engage with foundation options
- foundation courses as a planned route for students needing extra support
- results time, and finding a Plan B for students who don't achieve their expected grades
The session will be practical-based, and include real-life case studies, to explore issues around advising students who may not have the option of a straightforward degree.
Learning outcomes:
Attendees will have an understanding of:
- UK university foundation provision
- situations where a foundation pathway might be an option for students
- how to help students engage with foundation options
