UK universities should take advantage of Chinese students’ rising interest in creative arts degrees to remain competitive on the world stage, a new report has found.

A record number of disadvantaged students have applied to start university or college this autumn, new figures from UCAS show today.

Students from China and India have applied in record numbers through UCAS to start an undergraduate course in the UK this September. 

Most undergraduate applicants have now chosen which of their university or college offers to accept, as the deadline for the majority of them was Thursday 18 June.

For the first time, over a quarter of 18 year old applicants from England, Northern Ireland, and Wales have received a ‘conditional unconditional’ offer for an undergraduate place. However, they are less likely than ever to accept this type of offer.

33.7 per cent of all 18 year olds from England, and 26.7 per cent from Scotland, were accepted through UCAS to start an undergraduate course in 2018. Northern Ireland and Wales saw entry rates similar to 2016.

Today, UCAS publishes the latest acceptance figures for the 2018 application cycle, as of 28 days after A level results day. Typically, 95 per cent of students who will be accepted by the end of the cycle, have already been placed at this point.

Students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland receiving their exam results will find out today if they are going to university or college.

Figures released by UCAS show a robust start to the university admissions cycle for 2018, with the highest number of applicants to October deadline courses recorded since reporting at this deadline began.
