Student support

University is an exciting adventure, and at Winchester we do everything we can to support you through this new chapter of your life. We offer a wide range of services to support you during your time at the University so If you need information, advice or support, we are here to make it easy for you to get the help you need. 

 Health and Wellbeing 

  • Mental Wellbeing: Access free, confidential counselling, mental health advice, email counselling, and workshops. 
  • Student Journey Team: Get general advice for personal and academic issues like stress, settling in, relationships, housing, bullying, and traumatic events. 
  • Disability and Inclusion Team: Receive confidential services for disabilities, including help with Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA), exam arrangements, assistive technology, and learning agreements. 
  • Health and Medical Advice: Guidance on GP registration, dentists, and essential vaccinations like MenACWY. 

 

Financial Support 

  • Students and Money Team: Offers advice on student loans, bursaries, and scholarships, plus support for financial hardship. 
  • Widening Participation Bursary: Available for eligible students from under-represented backgrounds who may face higher costs. 
  • Digital Access Scheme: Provides support for digital resources. 
  • Money and Budgeting Advice: Get guidance on managing your finances. 
  • Learning and Employability Funds: Access the Winchester Learning Support Fund and Winchester Employability Fund for additional aid. 

 

Careers Support 

  • Career Exploration: Explore graduate career and study options with up-to-date resources. 
  • Application Assistance: Get help searching and applying for jobs, work experience, and postgraduate study, including CV and application writing. 
  • Skill Development: Learn interview skills, communication techniques, and how to succeed at assessment centres. 
  • Placements & Volunteering: Find placements and volunteering opportunities in various sectors. 
  • Careers Advice for Life: Ongoing career support available even after graduation. 

 

Academic Support 

  • Skill Development: Academic Success Advisers help you develop essential skills for learning and achieving your full potential. 
  • Specialist Support: Generalist advisers and specialist tutors are available for students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD), Autistic Spectrum Condition, or for whom English is an additional language. 
  • Workshops: Attend a wide range of workshops on assignment planning, referencing, critical thinking, exam revision, and presentation skills. 
  • One-to-One Sessions: Discuss your work individually with an adviser, in person or online. 
  • Online Resources: Access SkillsNet, an online platform with tips and materials to boost academic performance. 

 

Accommodation Support 

  • Variety of Options: Choose from both catered and self-catered accommodation, with specific rooms in all undergraduate areas. 
  • Quieter Living: Request a quieter environment when applying online if preferred. 
  • Disability Support: We endeavour to make reasonable adjustments for students who require extra support within their accommodation either due to a disability, long term medical condition or sensory/physical impairment. This may include making a required adaptation to a room or allocating to a particular location to help them be involved fully in uUniversity life and the student experience. 
  • Accessibility Discussions: Students with specific access requirements are encouraged to meet with the Disability and Housing teams early to discuss suitable accommodation and reasonable adjustments. 
  • Late Applications: While efforts are made to accommodate late applications, specific rooms or guarantees cannot be ensured after the deadline. 

 

Social Support 

  • Students' Union (SU): Represents and supports students, offering a wide range of opportunities, activities, and events. 
  • Sports: Join competitive and non-competitive sports teams for all interests. 
  • Societies and Networks: Engage with student-led societies and representational networks promoting equality and diversity. 
  • Academic Engagement: Participate in extra-curricular activities like Student Academic Representatives (StARs), Student Creators, and the Startup Hub. 
  • Campus Opportunities: Find part-time campus jobs (max 15 hours/week) through the SU or CareerConnect, and explore volunteering roles for skill development and connections.
