Think about what potential employers are looking for; people who are flexible, who can learn and who can cope with change. They want employability skills.
Do you have:
- good practical skills in English, maths, and ICT?
- a positive work attitude?
- the ability to organise and motivate yourself?
- work as part of a team?
- solve problems?
- follow instructions and accept criticism?
Do you understand:
- why customer care is important?
- what makes a business successful?
Are you ready to:
- work flexibly – part-time or full-time?
- keep learning so you can do a range of different job tasks?
How to get work
It takes effort and planning, and it’s easier to spot jobs that fit you if you know what you’re looking for. Remember though, life isn't perfect and you might have to compromise. Think about what help you might need – where to look for jobs, writing CVs and preparing for interviews.
It’s also important to remember that the law stops you from doing some jobs if you're under 18 – the Citizens Advice Bureau has info on what you can and can't do.
Work experience and volunteering
Many post-16 courses or programmes include work experience as part of the study programme, or you can arrange your own. It's a great way to find out more about working life, decide on future careers or study options and develop your employability skills.
Choose the organisation you'd like to help carefully – make sure it does something you feel is important and you feel enthusiastic about.
